Life Jacket Loaner Stations in Utah
What is a life jacket loaner station program?
Utah’s Life Jacket Loaner Station Program is a statewide safety initiative designed to reduce preventable drownings by increasing access to life jackets at popular recreation areas.
These self-serve stations provide U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets in a range of sizes for children and adults — completely free to use.
This program is made possible through a strong partnership with the Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation, Utah Division of State Parks and Intermountain Children's Health, which provides and oversees 23 loaner stations throughout Utah's State Parks. Together, we’re working to ensure that everyone — regardless of experience or resources — has access to a properly fitted life jacket.
How it works
- Take one before heading out on the water
- Wear it while boating, paddling, fishing, or playing near the shoreline
- Return it when you’re done so someone else can use it
Utah law requires one life jacket per person. Kids under 13 must wear one at all times. Adults — lead by example. Wear it!

How to properly fit a life jacket
A life jacket only works if it fits correctly. Take a few seconds before heading out to make sure it is ready to do its job.
Quick fit check
- Choose the right size based on weight, not just age
- Buckle and zip all closures
- Tighten straps until the jacket fits snugly
- Pull up at the shoulders — if it rides up past the ears, it is too loose
Water safety reminders
- Kids under 13 must wear a life jacket — but adults should too
- Cold water, sudden weather, and unexpected falls can happen fast
- Bring enough properly sized life jackets for everyone in your group
- Do not just pack it — wear it
Safety starts with you
Life jackets save lives — but only when worn. Make it a habit every time you are on the water, whether you are boating, paddling, kayaking, paddleboarding, or fishing near shore.
Don’t just bring it. Wear it.
Take one. Wear it. Return it.
Before you head out, make sure everyone in your group has a properly fitted life jacket. Because the best day on the water is one where you return home.
