38 Mary Cashem Canyon Fence: Uintah County’s application for an Access Protection Grant is to acquire the materials needed to construct a one-mile fence along the Mary Cashem Canyon Road (a Class D public road). Access to this road has been in jeopardy as a private landowner is questioning its validity as a County road.

In 2023, Simplot filed a quiet title lawsuit against Uintah County regarding the Mary Cashem Canyon Road. The Mary Cashem Canyon Road has been disputed by SF Phosphates (part of the J.R. Simplot Company) for over ten years, whether or not it’s a County road. Simplot has locked gates on the road closing off access to the scenic trail system and the Ashely National Forest. Uintah County and Simplot have agreed that if Uintah County provides the fencing materials, Simplot will provide the labor to install and maintain the fence. With the fencing in place, Simplot has also agreed to keep access to the road open to the public.
