If you’ve ever watched birds, you know how unique and interesting they can be. Whether you’ve just started bird-watching or you are an advanced “birder,” consider heading outdoors over the next few weeks to help gather important data about birds during the 126th annual nationwide Audubon Christmas Bird Count.

The annual Bryce Canyon Christmas Bird Count is Saturday, Dec 20th! Last year our volunteers counted nearly 800 birds from 36 species, can we do better this year?

The event is free and everyone is welcome, from first -time watchers to dedicated birders.

Evanston WY and UT
Those interested in participating in the annual Evanston Christmas Bird Count (CBC) should meet 8:00 a.m., Saturday December 20th, at the old Down Home Eatery parking lot, 8 miles north of Evanston on Rt. 89 at County Road 103.

The Evanston circle holds the all-time Christmas Bird Count record count for Greater Sage-Grouse, 698 in 1986.

2,420 individual birds and 45 different species were tallied in the Evanston count last year. This will be the 44th year for the Evanston CBC. About 40% of the count circle is in Utah.

Saturday, Dec. 14, 7:00 am – Ogden Christmas Bird Count. Meet at Denny’s (take 21st Street to 1100 W., on the north side by the Flying J Plaza, Ogden) for breakfast and to get your assignment. It is an all-day trip, so bring water and lunch.

Ouray National Wildlife Refuge / Green River
Whether you’re a beginning bird watcher or an advanced birder, come and help gather data on birds at the Ouray National Wildlife Refuge! We are partnering with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Audubon Society to host the 21st annual Ouray Christmas Bird Count. This will also mark Audubon’s 126th Christmas Bird Count. Support over a century’s worth of bird conservation work and enjoy a day exploring the great outdoors!

Provo
The Provo CBC will be on Dec 20th. We will have a tally potluck that evening at 6pm at Utah Lake State Park (a park pass will not be required to attend the potluck). Participants can sign up to participate in the Provo CBC here: Sign-up Link

Salt Lake City
If you want to volunteer for this count, contact Ian Batterman [email protected] ( or call or text 920.360.0805) for more information. The CBC is a survey and not a typical birding field trip. The goal is to count all the bird species and individuals in an area, so it is a long and fast-paced day depending on which area you count.
